South Point School Guwahati India Open International Rating Chess Tournament 2023

Kumar Gaurav of Bihar clinched the champion title in the tournament by scoring 8 points out of possible 9. 
Arpan Das of West Bengal, Y Dhanabir Singh of Manipur, Rahul Soram Singh  of Assam and Ningthem Oinam of Manipur  scored  7.5 points each and were placed from 2nd to 5th position on basis of tie break score. 


Altogether 260 players from across the country participated in this swiss league nine rounds  tournament which was recognised by the World Chess Federation. 
The tournament was conducted under the supervision of International Arbiter Biswajit Bharadwaj as the Chief Arbiter and he was assisted by FIDE Arbiter Pranab Kumar Nath, Swaraj Burgohain, Apurba Sonowal, Manik Dutta, Rajnish Verma and others. Nandan Buragohain was the tournament Director of the the tournament.


Former commonwealth champion and International MasterAtanu Lahiri of West Bengal was the chief guest of the closing ceremony in the presence of Dr S Lakshamanan, IAS, Secretary, Industries & Commerce Dept, Govt of Assam, Krishnanjan Chanda, Principal, South Point School, Mandira Chanda, Past District Governor of Lions Club International, Bidhan Das, Deputy Liason Officer, DSW, Mridul Kumar Mahanta, IAS, President Assam Chess Club and host of players, officials and guests.

The tournament was inaugurated  by Shri Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Health & Family Welfare etc Government of Assam in the presence of Shri Siddhartha Bhattacharya, MLA ,East Guwahati Constituency. Also present on the occasion were Shri Krishnanjan Chanda, Principal South Point School, Shri Anjan Deka, Vice President, Assam Chess Club and host of players and guests.

This tournament offered a total prize money five lakhs rupees as cash award which is the second highest prize money in any open fide rating chess tournament organsied in North east India. Assam Chess Club holds the record of providing the highest prize money till date in its FIDE Rating tournament organised at Royal Global School in the year 2009.

The tournament was organised by South point school Guwahati and Assam Chess Club.
